What is FEES?

Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a gold standard in swallowing diagnostics that was first discussed in a paper by Dr. Susan Langmore (SLP), Dr. Nels Olson (ENT), and Ken Schatz (SLP) published in 1988

• A trans-nasal endoscopic instrumental procedure to assess the safety and efficiency of the pharyngeal stage of swallowing
• A small flexible endoscope is passed through the nose and into the pharynx
• Visualization of nasopharynx, hypo pharynx, base of tongue, and larynx
• The video, images, and audio from the nasal cavity, larynx, and pharynx are recorded and viewed on a monitor
